More Than a Century of Service

History

Find a Lutheran community for you or a loved one.

Since 1890, the heart of our mission has always been the same: to honor, inspire and support choice and opportunity in partnership with older adults.

What once started as a small cottage for seniors in Washington, D.C., is now a family of retirement communities and services supporting older adults throughout Maryland and Virginia. As older adult’s needs have changed, National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) has adapted to better meet those needs. Although the heritage of NLCS is rooted in the Lutheran expression of faith, people of all beliefs and backgrounds are welcome.

The first National Lutheran Home welcomed residents in 1895 and underwent several expansions. In 1980, it relocated to become a nursing home in Rockville, Maryland, and built a 300-bed skilled nursing facility on 30 acres, now known as The Village at Rockville. In 2008, the organization created National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) to guide the organization through expansion and to serve older adults through new avenues.
